June-uary is here!
Pineapple express, high pressure, inversion and warm air jet streams from the south are key ski hill talking points right now and they’re all having quite the effect on our coastal Mount Cain.
First things first! Yes, we’re planning to be open this Saturday, Sunday and Magic Monday. That being said, safety is our number one priority, so if at any point we cannot safely open the ski area, we will postpone or cancel the day’s operations. Our hopes are high though that this will be a short spring like blip in the season and we’ll scrape through!
Cain Cup is also still planned to be run and won! So don’t put the spandex and expensive wax away just yet. The crowns are forged and the cup is being prepared to be hoisted high by the King and Queen of the course. Check in at the Lodge for 9am to get the low down on the race plan on Saturday morning.
While in the Lodge, we have almost all the Cain Hostel rooms still available to book for this weekend. It’s a one night minimum now for these bookings so there’s no excuse to miss the racing or sunny spring like ski days!
With well over 100mm of rain falling over the weekend and warm weather for the foreseeable forecast, it’s safe to say we’ve lost a lot of snow. Especially on the lower half of the mountain. We’ve got around 40cms of firm rain condensed at the lower elevations and it is freezing over night with the humidity dropping down below 30%. Early season conditions and many unmarked hazards will be present.
The silver lining of this is the Cain Road is now gravel all the way to the parking lot. There is still the potential for ice in the mornings, and in shaded sections so as always, take care.
Was great to see you all braving the elements this past weekend. While everyone was lapping the misty runs, 12 Cain regulars were absorbing more than just the moisture in the air, with the first Avalanche Search and Rescue course held by the Canadian Avalanche Association on the Island being run on Mount Cain. Huge thank you to Jory Shepard and Dave Kallai for imparting their knowledge on the team and the CAA for facilitating the course. Cain is now slightly more safe-ish!
See you in your speed suits!
