As the hill has slipped back into hibernation briefly for our mini-Christmas break, it’s hard to believe only nine short days ago the mountain was green, and sheets of water were cascading down the hill side instead of hooting and hollering snow sliders!
Opening dreams were fulfilled and our prayers to Ullr have been delivered, with over 1.2m of snow falling mostly straight down and as cold as the island gets, it’s safe to say the Christmas miracle has happened. Those that made it up for opening were treating to some interior type of snow conditions but with coastal type depths.
With all this snow flying it’s easy to forget getting to Mount Cain isn’t necessarily as easy as sliding into the load station for another lap on a blue bird pow day. Please remember our road is only cleared of snow and not treated from the highway. So, the likelihood of ice sections and needing chains to navigate them is extremely likely when travelling up and usually more likely down. Although we no longer have restrictions on direction of travel at times of day. Please be courteous, drive slowly and expect on coming traffic when travelling up or down at times when people are likely to be coming to or leaving the hill. Currently there’s firm packed snow, with extremely slippery sections all the way from the highway to the Cain lot and chains required for almost all vehicles.
