Happy Fall Mount Cain community!
The yellow in the forests, the orange in the pumpkin patches, and the grey in the skies have us turning our attention to when the rain starts to fall frozen from above! Our favourite season is just mere months away, and preparations are in full swing.
As always, its kicked off with the work party weekend and the amazing folks willing to sacrifice a weekend to see the mountain spick and span for the snow ahead. A massive thank you to those that made the trek, too many names to name but Cain loves you and you know who you are!
All manner of tasks were completed. From cleaning, painting and renovations of buildings, splitting and stacking firewood, brush cutting and trimming ski runs, wrenching and tune ups on the snow cats. The hill was a hive of activity and many friendly faces, new and familiar were there. A solid turn out, but we would always love to see more of you next time 😉
Exciting developments also got underway, with solar systems being installed into Cypress, Blueberry and the office building. This all being made possible and affordable by Sarah our grants director with assistance from Jason Village and the amazing team from Hakai Energy Solutions. A company specialising in custom solar energy systems and we’re beyond stoked to have them installing a system for us! So give them a wave next time you see one of their trucks or a call if you’re thinking of installing anything solar!
As the sun dipped, tools were packed up and folks gathered in the Cain Lodge for the Annual General Meeting. Director reports were delivered and many mountain topics discussed. Congratulations Tyler Fields and Lucas Smith on being elected on to the board, in Health and Safety and communications respectively. Also congratulations Drew Nagainis in his appointment as Lifts director and huge thank you to Dave Steele for his hard work in the role over the years!
One of the most asked about announcements in the meeting was a new ski bus service operated by Western Educational Services, who are planning to provide Friday departures and Sunday returns from the South Island delivering snow enthusiasts to Mount Cain and nearby hotels. Sat/Sun day trip transport will also available from Campbell River, with stops in Sayward, Woss, and the base. For more information keep an eye on their website at: https://www.weacharters.ca/vancouver-island-ski-bus.htm
Cain is hiring for the upcoming season, with key roles needing to be filled. So come work with us this season! Grooming is looking for a groomer operator. Accommodations is looking for a accommodations manager and two hospitality cleaners. The Ticket booth is looking for an assistant manager and two ticket attendants. The ski shop is looking for technicians. Ski school is looking for both ski and snowboard instructors. And the lifts department is looking for lift attendants and operators. If you or anyone you know would be interested in any of these positions or more information please reach out to ltanaka@mountcain.com
There are still ongoing works in preparation for the hill to open, and there’s two main tasks the mountain would love help with. The back of the ski shop has plenty of work left to complete. Or if an outside task is more your jam, then a crew is working away at the large task of brush cutting the ski runs. So if you’ve got carpentry skills, or you have a line trimmer with a saw blade attached and some time to swing it, or even just a hand free to hold a tape measure – let’s chat! Contact info@mountcain.com and we can sort out logistics.
Some important up coming dates for everyone to remember:
- Wednesday November 5 accommodations bookings open
- Saturday/Sunday November 29/30 Training weekend
- Saturday December 6 tentative open day!
With the business out of the way, don’t forget to kick off that pre-season training plan, binge-watch your favourite telemark ski films (or whichever inferior snow sliding technique takes your fancy) and start honing those edges! It won’t be long before the lift lines come alive and you’re being handed a T to be towed to some dreamy Mount Cain turns.
See you slope side!
Phil🪛
